Dog doors can have their place in the home for well-mannered dogs but they are not appropriate for every situation.

House-training

I advise against using a dog door during housetraining. It’s best that you take your dog outside so you can be sure that they have eliminated before coming back into the home. If they are free to enter and exit at their choosing a more likely scenario is that they will just go explore the yard, chase squirrels, or some other activity you had not intended. Just because a dog has free access to a toileting area of your choosing it does not ensure they will use it. This is the reason why dog doors are not appropriate for housetraining. And if you are not outside with your dog, you cannot be sure whether or not they eliminated, nor train them to use a designated area if you are not there to direct them. Housetraining

Insecurity/fear

For an anxious or insecure dog a dog door can enhance a dog’s insecurity because they may view the dog door as a way for things that concern them to enter the home. Much like placing someone in a motel room in a questionable part of town with the caveat being the door leading into the room will not lock.

Training

A standard door or gate is important in the training process and early training should incorporate control and permission at each access point. It’s important that dogs are not permitted to charge out doors and gates. I don’t let dogs move forward unless they are exercising self-control. Meaning they will not exit the house, gate, or car unless under control and I have given them permission. Doors and gates present opportunities to teach a dog to settle and to gain their cooperation.
